Indore:

Trapped in a vicious cycle of borrowing to fund his expensive hobbies, a 24-year-old man from Indore allegedly staged his own kidnapping with the help of friends and demanded a ransom of Rs 1 lakh from his father. However, swift police action exposed the conspiracy.

The main accused, Satish Gupta, along with his two friends—Aarush Arora and Tejveer Singh Sandhu—have been arrested based on certain clues, police said on Wednesday.

Despite his costly hobbies, Satish was reportedly involved in betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.

Shreeram Gupta, a resident of Indore, received a call on Tuesday informing him that his son, Satish Gupta, had been kidnapped.

“The senior Gupta was told to pay Rs 1 lakh as ransom for his son’s release,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Devendra Singh Dhurve told reporters.

Based on investigations and clues, police detained Arora and Sandhu. Their interrogation revealed the truth behind the “kidnapping” story.

Dhurve stated that Satish had involved his two friends in the plan and instructed them to call his father, demanding ransom for his release from the supposed kidnappers.

The primary motive behind the crime appears to be Satish’s desperation to settle his debts.

“Satish accumulated a significant debt due to his expensive hobbies. According to him, he fabricated the kidnapping story to repay the loan. He was also involved in betting on the Indian Premier League,” the ACP said, adding that a detailed investigation is ongoing.
