Chandigarh:

Punjab has revoked the licenses of 40 travel agents amidst a major controversy surrounding the deportation of Indians who illegally migrated to the US. Licenses of some IELTS centers have also been canceled, and similar actions are expected in the future, according to sources.

Sources revealed that the Amritsar police have taken action based on a complaint against travel agents operating illegally in the city, with further steps anticipated in the coming days.

The police are continuously registering cases against travel agents involved in illegal immigration and conducting raids to apprehend them, sources added.

The complainant in this case, Sarabjit Singh, stated that he had submitted a letter to Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni.

Earlier, government sources indicated that Punjabis form the largest group among Indians being deported by the US. Three flights arrived on February 5, February 15, and February 16, bringing back 333 Indians. Of these, the majority — 126 individuals, or 37.8 percent — were from Punjab, sources reported.

This clarification followed Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s objection to the flights landing in his state. Sources noted that due to the high number of Punjabis among the deportees, 21 flights have landed in Amritsar since May 2020.

Cases of illegal immigration from Punjab — where individuals seeking a better life are lured with promises of foreign visas in exchange for hefty sums, only to be sent on fake visas — have been widely reported, coining the term “Dunki route” in the local lexicon.

Reports suggest that over 3,200 police cases have been filed against travel agents in Punjab over the past three years.

Several arrests have been made in these cases, including Punjabi singer Fatehjit Singh, who was apprehended by police in September last year. The most sought-after destinations include the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia.
