Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria since former President Bashar al-Assad was toppled in December.

Israel has conducted air strikes near Syria’s Mediterranean port city of Tartous, according to Syrian state media.

An Israeli military statement on Monday revealed that its forces “targeted a military site where weapons belonging to the previous Syrian regime were stored in the Qardaha area,” the hometown of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, located north of the Tartous port.

Syrian state news agency SANA reported that “Israeli occupation aircraft carried out air strikes on the outskirts of Tartous city, with no human casualties recorded so far.” It added that “civil defense and specialized teams are working to verify the locations of the targets.”

Following the swift offensive in December that overthrew Syria’s longtime leader al-Assad, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes on Syrian military assets, claiming the goal was to prevent these resources from falling into hostile hands.

Last Tuesday, the Israeli military announced it had carried out air strikes targeting military sites containing weapons in southern Syria, just days after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for the demilitarization of the area.

Israel has also deployed forces into a United Nations-monitored demilitarized zone within Syria since al-Assad’s removal, a move that violates the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.

Participants in Syria’s national dialogue conference last week reaffirmed their rejection of what they called Netanyahu’s “provocative” statements. They urged the international community to pressure Israel to halt any “aggression and violations” and condemned “the Israeli incursion into Syrian territory.”
