Former NY Detective Who Worked for Mafia Convicted of Lying to FBI

A former New York detective who moonlighted by working for a mafia family and contributed to a mini-mob war on Long Island while protecting its gambling operations was convicted Wednesday of lying to the FBI.

Hector Rosario, 51, a former detective for the Nassau County Police on Long Island, was acquitted of obstruction of justice, the most serious charge he faced. The verdict followed a seven-day trial in Brooklyn federal court.

"Hector Rosario cared more about lining his pockets with Bonanno family money and protecting his own interests than his fidelity to the law," said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. "He disgracefully compromised the investigative work of his fellow detectives by tipping off a target and lied to federal agents as the walls were closing in on him."

Rosario’s Role in Mob Activity

Federal prosecutors said Rosario conspired to target rival Genovese family members in a feud that erupted after the organized crime families struck an unusual agreement to split the proceeds from a gelato shop’s backroom gambling den, according to the New York Post.

The Bonanno and Genovese families, two of New York City’s five major mafia families, generally stayed within their separate territories during the 1980s and early 2000s, according to a long-time mob investigator. However, the peace did not last. Prosecutors alleged that Rosario even staged a fake police raid at a covert casino operated by the Genovese family.

U.S. Attorney’s Statement

U.S. Attorney John Durham called Rosario, a 15-year police veteran, a "corrupt detective" who chose loyalty to the mob "over the public he was sworn to protect."

Rosario was interviewed by FBI agents in 2020 as they investigated Bonanno and Genovese criminal activities in the suburbs east of New York City. Authorities said he falsely claimed he had no knowledge of the mafia or illegal gambling operations.

Dismissal and Charges

Rosario was fired from the police force in 2022. He was among nine individuals charged after federal authorities dismantled the gambling racket. His defense attorneys argued that the case relied on the unreliable testimony of mobsters who were cooperating with prosecutors to avoid their own criminal charges.

The other mafia families in New York are the Colombo, Gambino, and Lucchese families.
