An Exclusive Interview with the Military Defector Who Exposed the Systematic Torture of 11,000 Syrian Civilians
In an exclusive Al Jazeera interview, the Syrian military defector known by the codename "Caesar" shared his harrowing story. Between 2011 and 2013, Caesar smuggled approximately 53,000 photographs from the Syrian government’s secret archives, nearly half of which depicted deceased and tortured civilian detainees. He released these images to the public in 2014, and they were later presented to the United Nations in what became known as the "Caesar Report." Human Rights Watch authenticated the photographs as genuine and called for the Syrian regime to be tried for crimes against humanity.
Fearing for his safety, Caesar fled Syria and, under heavy disguise, began speaking publicly about the photographs in Europe and the United States. On December 8, 2024, the al-Assad regime collapsed. After years in hiding, Caesar has now chosen to reveal his identity in an exclusive interview with Fairouz Ziani. This marks the closing of a dark, 12-year chapter in his life, allowing him to step out of the shadows and renew his call for justice against those responsible for this systematic brutality.
