Gillespie Accuses Aaqib of Undermining Him and Kirsten to Secure Coaching Role
Former Pakistan Test cricket coach Jason Gillespie has called his successor, Aaqib Javed, a “clown” and accused him of undermining both Gillespie and ex-white-ball coach Gary Kirsten in order to take over as the national team’s coach across all formats.
Gillespie’s remarks came in response to a social media post quoting Aaqib Javed shortly after Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the ICC Champions Trophy, where the team failed to secure a single win.
Aaqib had told reporters on Tuesday that Pakistan had gone through 16 coaches and 26 selectors in approximately two years, and any team would struggle under such circumstances.
“This is hilarious,” Gillespie said on social media. “Aaqib was clearly undermining Gary and me behind the scenes, campaigning to be the coach in all formats. He is a clown.”

Gillespie, who had signed a two-year contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in April, resigned as red-ball coach in December amid reports of a strained relationship with the board. He was subsequently replaced by Aaqib.
Kirsten, on the other hand, stepped down as white-ball coach in October, just six months into his role. Gillespie temporarily took over Kirsten’s duties during Pakistan’s limited-overs tour of Australia.
Aaqib was later appointed as Pakistan’s interim white-ball coach for the Champions Trophy, and his role has now been extended to cover the team’s upcoming tour of New Zealand, which includes five T20s and three ODIs starting March 16.
Gillespie, a former Australian fast bowler, played 71 Tests and 97 one-day internationals between 1996 and 2006 before transitioning into coaching.
Pakistan hosted its first major ICC event in 29 years when the Champions Trophy returned after an eight-year gap. However, the defending champions delivered a dismal performance, losing two group matches and having one washed out.
Following their exit, Pakistan dropped star batter Babar Azam and white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan from the T20 squad, appointing Salman Ali Agha as the new T20 captain.
Aaqib, who also serves as Pakistan’s national selector, acknowledged that frequent changes in coaching and selection have not benefited the team.
“We have changed nearly 16 coaches and 26 selectors in the last two years or so,” he said during a press conference announcing the latest overhaul of Pakistan’s limited-overs squads. “You apply that formula to any team in the world, and they will also be in the same situation. Until you achieve consistency from the top down, starting from the chairman, your team will not progress.”
Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand begins on March 16 with a five-match T20 series followed by a three-match ODI series.
