Tsunami Phantoms: The Forgotten Spirits of Kamaishi | Documentary

By: fateh

A series of taxi rides in Japan uncover eerie stories of unresolved grief and trauma stemming from the devastating 2011 tsunami.

The Japanese city of Kamaishi was nearly obliterated by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami of 2011, marking the worst natural disaster in Japan’s history, which claimed almost 20,000 lives.

Over a decade later, local taxi drivers report regularly picking up "ghost passengers" believed to be the spirits of the deceased. Some passengers have also noticed a rising number of wild deer, which are thought by some to serve as messengers between the physical and spiritual realms. A night spent with Kamaishi’s taxi drivers unveils a community deeply haunted by its losses, still grappling with the need for closure.

Tsunami Ghosts is a documentary film directed by Katharine Round.
