Reliance Jio announced a strategic partnership with SpaceX on Wednesday, a move that will bring Starlink broadband services to India. The Indian telecommunications provider stated that it will utilize Elon Musk’s company’s constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites to deliver high-speed broadband services, even in the country’s most remote and rural areas. Starlink equipment will be available for purchase at Reliance Jio stores, along with customer service, installation, and activation—subject to SpaceX obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals to sell Starlink in India.
### Reliance Jio-Starlink Partnership
According to a press release from Reliance Jio, Starlink complements its existing high-speed broadband services, such as JioAirFiber and JioFiber. It is expected to quickly and affordably expand internet availability in hard-to-reach locations. This initiative aligns with the telecom provider’s goal of making high-speed internet accessible not only to enterprises but also to small and medium businesses, as well as communities across India.
Once regulatory approvals are secured, customers can purchase Starlink equipment from Reliance Jio stores. Additionally, the telecom provider will offer installation and activation services on behalf of SpaceX.
Following the announcement, Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX, said, “We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorization from the Government of India to provide more people, organizations, and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services.”
To further strengthen India’s digital ecosystem, both companies will explore additional areas of collaboration, leveraging their respective infrastructure. This includes Starlink’s extensive low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, which consists of nearly 7,000 active satellites delivering low-latency broadband services to some of the world’s most remote regions.
This marks the second agreement signed by Elon Musk’s company after a similar partnership was announced between SpaceX and Bharti Airtel, which will also sell Starlink equipment in its stores across India. Airtel is expected to offer Starlink services to business customers, communities, schools, and health centers, among others.
