Local favorite Tommy Paul was defeated in straight sets by former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16.

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev overcame a day of rain delays to defeat local hopeful Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-0 and advance to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells, California. Medvedev is aiming to improve on his runner-up finishes in the tournament over the past two years.

Taking the court at around 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday, four hours after his scheduled start in the night session on Stadium Court, Medvedev capitalized on Paul’s 31 unforced errors to secure the win.

“It wasn’t an easy preparation,” Medvedev said. “We both arrived early and then faced rain, rain, rain. I think we both went in a bit rusty, with him perhaps a little more than me.”

Paul had his chances, rallying after Medvedev surged to a 4-0 lead by winning four consecutive games. However, Medvedev responded by winning the next eight games—clinching the first set with a pair of forehand errors from Paul and then dominating the second set to seal the victory with a final break of the American’s serve.

“It’s a pretty strange scoreline,” Medvedev remarked. “Whoever won games, seemed to win them in a row.”

Medvedev, who lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the finals of the tournament the past two years, will next face France’s Arthur Fils. Fils secured his spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over American Marcos Giron in a match interrupted by more than three hours of rain delays in the first set.
