New Delhi:
The Rajya Sabha early Friday adopted a Statutory Resolution approving the imposition of President’s Rule in the conflict-ridden state of Manipur. Members across party lines supported the decision, while the opposition criticized the Central government for the ongoing situation in the state.
Speaking at the conclusion of a discussion on the resolution, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed hope for an early resolution to the conflict between the two warring communities in Manipur.
Mr. Shah informed the House that two meetings between the communities have already taken place in Manipur and expressed optimism that a third meeting would soon be held in New Delhi.
The minister assured the members that the government had taken all necessary steps to restore normalcy in the northeastern state.
While acknowledging that 260 lives were lost in the ethnic violence in Manipur, he noted that the majority of the casualties occurred during the first week of the conflict.
He stated that discussions were ongoing with both the Meitei and Kuki communities to find a peaceful resolution.
Mr. Shah also criticized the opposition for “politicizing” the violence, pointing out that similar incidents had occurred in the state during the Congress regime, when no prime minister had visited the state.
