Viral Confrontation Between Charter Boat Captain and Young Fisherman Sparks Outrage
A charter boat captain in Florida has gone viral after aggressively confronting a young fisherman he accused of nearly causing a collision. The heated exchange, which unfolded on April 1, was recorded by Gage Towles, the fisherman at the center of the incident, and uploaded to his Facebook page, where it has garnered over 15 million views.
The video shows Brock Horner, a 40-year-old charter boat captain, pulling up alongside Towles’ small fishing boat on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Horner, visibly angry, jumps onto Towles’ boat and demands to know if Towles was the person who had allegedly cursed at him earlier in the day. Towles denies the accusation, prompting Horner to escalate the confrontation. Horner claims the vessel involved in the near-collision did not have the required safety lights.
Towles responds by telling Horner that he had no right to speed through the Peace River’s bridge area, a scenic waterway flowing into Charlotte Harbor. This comment only fuels Horner’s anger, leading him to challenge Towles by saying, "You wanna (expletive) go?" Towles attempts to diffuse the situation, reminding Horner that he was the one who approached aggressively while he was simply trying to fish.
At one point, Towles suggests that Horner might be acting tough in front of his friends, which further enrages the captain. Horner, who owns a charter boat company, declares that he and his companions are veterans and that he is "the best charter captain you’ll ever meet in your mother f—ing life."
As the confrontation intensifies, Horner suddenly jumps onto Towles’ boat. Towles, who repeatedly pleads, "Chill bro, please! I’m a kid," hits the throttle and speeds off with Horner still aboard. Horner continues yelling, demanding an apology for what he describes as being terrorized on his own boat. Towles eventually drives Horner back to his boat, maintaining that he did not swear at him.
The incident caught the attention of local authorities, and Horner has since been charged with burglary with assault or battery, non-forced entry, under Florida law. Pinpointing the seriousness of the situation, Punta Gorda Police Chief Pam Smith stated, "This type of behavior will not be tolerated in our waterways—or anywhere else in our city. We are committed to ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors, both on land and on the water."
Horner’s attorney released a statement expressing his client’s remorse for the confrontation. "He is deeply sorry. What began as a moment of frustration and concern escalated in a way it simply should not have," the statement read. The attorney also praised Towles for handling the situation with "impressive composure and class."
The statement further revealed that Horner is a decorated combat veteran who served in Afghanistan, where he sustained a traumatic brain injury and is recognized as 100% disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs. While his attorney emphasized that this is not an excuse for his actions, it is part of his story.
Horner’s attorney also claimed that the incident has had severe consequences for Horner’s personal and professional life. His business has been "destroyed," his reputation damaged, and his wife and mother have faced harassment and threats.
The viral video has sparked widespread debate online, with many condemning Horner’s actions while acknowledging the complexities of his background. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining composure and respecting boundaries, especially in high-stress situations.
