Tech Mogul Believes Attack, Which Left 40,000 Without Access to Site, Orchestrated by ‘Large Group’ or ‘a Country’
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has stated that his social media platform, X, was the target of a “massive cyberattack” after the service experienced an outage, leaving tens of thousands of users unable to access their accounts.
According to the tracking website Downdetector.com, complaints about outages surged on Monday at 10:00 and 14:00 GMT, with over 40,000 users reporting issues accessing the platform.
Musk took to X to post that while the platform is targeted daily, the latest attack was “done with a lot of resources” and was likely orchestrated by “a large, coordinated group and/or a country.” He did not provide evidence to support this claim.
The worst disruptions were reported along the United States coasts, with 56 percent of the issues related to the X app and 33 percent affecting the website, as per Downdetector.com.
This is not the first time the platform, formerly known as Twitter, has faced technical issues. In March 2023, Twitter experienced multiple glitches for over an hour, with links malfunctioning, some users unable to log in, and images failing to load for others.
Musk acquired Twitter in 2022 and quickly laid off the majority of its staff. Since then, the platform has faced repeated technical issues, alongside a noticeable shift to the right in its discourse.
Anger
As one of US President Donald Trump’s most influential allies, Musk made his accusations in response to a post connecting the outages to recent controversies, including his work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk and his team at DOGE were tasked by Trump to reduce the size and cost of the federal bureaucracy. To date, approximately 25,000 workers have been fired, and another 75,000 have accepted buyouts out of the 2.3 million civilian federal workforce.
Musk’s political activities have sparked widespread anger across the US, leading to protests at Tesla dealerships, fires at the Tesla factory outside Berlin, and incidents at Tesla charging stations.
In addition to overseeing the mass layoffs of federal workers, Musk has played a key role in the cancellation of more than 83 percent of all programs at the US Agency for International Development.
On Sunday, Musk entered the geopolitical arena, claiming that the Ukrainian army’s “entire front line would collapse” without his Starlink internet service.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski responded, stating that Poland, which funds Ukraine’s Starlink costs to aid in repelling Russia’s invasion, might need to seek alternative suppliers. Musk retaliated with a blunt post: “Be quiet, small man. You pay a tiny fraction of the cost. And there is no substitute for Starlink.”
