Bilaspur: Former Congress MLA from Bilaspur, Bamber Thakur, was shot at by unidentified assailants at his residence on Friday, according to the police. Thakur, along with his personal security officer (PSO), sustained injuries in the attack. An eyewitness reported that the attackers fired approximately 12 rounds of bullets.
The incident occurred while the former MLA was sitting in the courtyard of the government accommodation allotted to his wife in Bilaspur, along with others. Four individuals arrived and opened fire. Thakur suffered a bullet wound to his leg.
A manhunt has been initiated to apprehend the culprits, who reportedly fled on foot towards the main market, stated SP Sandeep Dhawal in a statement to PTI. He added that the accused would be arrested and charged under relevant sections of the law.
Following the attack, Thakur was immediately referred to Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla, while the PSO was rushed to AIIMS Bilaspur for treatment.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took note of the incident and stated, "I have spoken to Bamber Thakur and urged him to go to AIIMS, but he preferred to be treated at IGMC Shimla. The Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to make the necessary arrangements."
In a video statement, Sukhu also mentioned, "Directions have been issued to set up barricades on roads and highways to apprehend those responsible for the shooting."
