Gautam Gambhir Remains Unsatisfied Despite India’s Advancement to Champions Trophy Final Due to One Concern

By: fateh

Not one to be easily satisfied, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir stated that his team is still seeking the “perfect game” despite entering the Champions Trophy final with an undefeated record. He expressed hope that this ideal performance would materialize in the summit clash on Sunday. India secured their spot in the final by defeating Australia by four wickets in the first semifinal on Tuesday, with veteran batsman Virat Kohli scoring a composed 84 runs.

“See, in international sports, you always strive to improve. You can’t say you’ve checked all the boxes. We still haven’t played a perfect game. I will never be satisfied with the performances,” Gambhir remarked during the post-match press conference.

Gambhir expressed optimism that India could deliver that “perfect game” in the Champions Trophy final on March 9.

“We still have one more game to go. Hopefully, we can play a flawless game. We want to keep improving, we want to be ruthless on the field but remain humble off it as well,” he added.

India has made several bold decisions throughout the tournament, such as fielding four spinners, promoting Axar Patel to No. 5, and moving KL Rahul down to No. 6 to meet the team’s requirements. While these moves may seem unconventional from the outside, Gambhir explained that they were part of a broader strategy to keep players “out of their comfort zone” in order to maximize their potential.

“Cricket is all about stepping out of your comfort zone—that’s how you grow. If everyone stays in their comfort zone, stagnation sets in. I believe in this approach, and you’ve seen the results. I know people keep bringing up the 3-1 series in Australia, but everyone in the dressing room—whether it’s the coaching staff or the players—is pushing their boundaries. Hopefully, we continue doing what’s best for Indian cricket,” he said.

Future Discussions Only After the Final

At some point in the near future, Gambhir will need to sit down with senior players to discuss their future plans. However, for now, the former Indian opener is fully focused on the Champions Trophy final, while keeping that important conversation in mind.

“I always try to stay as present as possible. Right now, all I can say is that our focus is entirely on the game on the 9th. There’s a long-term vision and plan, but at this moment, it’s only about the 9th. After that, we can sit down and strategize,” he added.

Gambhir also praised the team for the seamless manner in which they chased down a challenging target of 265 runs against Australia.

“I think it was a very professional performance, and the reason I say that is because we kept wickets in hand, which was part of our plan. We knew the pitch could slow down in the second half. We executed the chase really well. By the 40th over, we were only four wickets down with two set batsmen at the crease. With the quality and depth we have, we always felt in control,” he noted.
