Macy’s will close 66 of its stores in the “A Bold New Chapter” plan. The liquidation sales are scheduled to begin in January, the retailer announced to Axios on Thursday.
What is it about:The struggling department store chain is shrinking as it struggles with declines in sales.
- Macy’s announced in February of last year that it would close 150 stores by 2026. That’s around one-third of its stores.
- The retailer also announced that it is pursuing top brand names and is planning to increase its investment in “350 go-forward Macy’s locations.”
- Tony Spring, Macy’s chair and CEO, announced in a statement that the company has decided to close stores that are not performing “to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores.”
The big pictureThe department store industry has been in a state of turmoil for a number of years trying to keep up with nimbler chains in the big box fashion retailers, fast-fashion chains and online competitors.
- The industry has witnessed the collapse of established chains like Sears, JCPenney and Neiman Marcus.
- Kohl’s announced on Thursday that it would be closing 27 stores by the end of April.
FlashbackIn late 2020 prior to the pandemic hit, Macy’s Inc., which comprises Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury has announced that it will shutter 500 stores, or about a fifth of them in the three-year plan.
- Macy’s was not able to reach its goals and closed the store’s namesake, which is 80.
- The year before, it had to close five more stores.
