Rescuers have successfully pulled a man alive from the rubble five days after a devastating earthquake struck Myanmar. Amid the ongoing crisis, there are increasing calls for the military government to allow more aid into the affected areas and to cease attacks on rebel groups.
The shallow 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which occurred on Friday, caused widespread destruction across Myanmar, flattening buildings, killing at least 2,886 people, and leaving thousands homeless.
Several prominent armed groups engaged in conflict with the military have temporarily halted hostilities to focus on earthquake recovery efforts. However, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the military government, has vowed to continue “defensive activities” against what he referred to as “terrorists.”
United Nations agencies, human rights organizations, and foreign governments have urged all parties involved in Myanmar’s civil war to stop fighting and prioritize assisting those impacted by the earthquake, the most severe to hit the country in decades.
While hopes of finding more survivors are dwindling, there was a moment of relief and joy on Wednesday when a man was rescued alive from the ruins of a hotel in the capital city, Naypyidaw.
