Civilian Aircraft Violates Flight Restriction Near Mar-a-Lago
A civilian aircraft that violated a temporary flight restriction (TFR) near President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate was detected and "escorted out" by military officials on Sunday.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated that its F-16 fighter aircraft responded to a general aviation aircraft flying over Palm Beach, Florida. The civilian aircraft breached the TFR at approximately 1:15 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time and was safely escorted out of the area by NORAD aircraft.

NORAD also reported that its aircraft dispensed flares during the incident, which may have been visible to civilians. The flares were used to draw attention from or communicate with the pilot. NORAD emphasized that flares are deployed with the highest regard for safety, burn out quickly, and pose no danger to people on the ground.
General Gregory Guillot, NORAD Commander, stated that the agency works closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to maintain airspace safety, particularly in areas with Temporary Flight Restrictions. He stressed that adherence to TFR procedures is essential for flight safety, national security, and the protection of the President.

General Guillot noted that the increasing number of TFR violations suggests many civilian pilots are not reviewing Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) before flights, as required by the FAA. He advised pilots intercepted by NORAD aircraft to immediately tune to frequency 121.5 or 243.0, reverse course, and await further instructions.
