Pope Francis Hospitalized with Double Pneumonia for Three Weeks, His Longest Papal Absence Yet
Pope Francis has released an audio message expressing his gratitude to well-wishers worldwide who have been praying for his recovery. This marks his first public communication since being hospitalized three weeks ago.
The brief, two-line message was recorded by the Pope on Thursday from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and broadcast to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican for the nightly recitation of the rosary.

Since the 88-year-old pontiff’s hospitalization on February 14, pilgrims have gathered in St. Peter’s Square every evening. The hundreds of people present applauded upon hearing the message.
On Friday, the Vatican reported that the Pope had a “calm night” of rest and woke up just before 8 a.m.

The Pope has not been seen in public since entering the hospital, marking his longest absence since becoming the head of the Catholic Church 12 years ago. His doctors have not indicated how long the treatment might last.
The Vatican has been providing twice-daily updates on his health—once in the morning and once in the evening. On Thursday, it confirmed that Francis was in “stable” condition for the third consecutive day. However, the doctors remain cautious, stating, “the doctors are still maintaining a reserved prognosis,” as they are uncertain how his condition will evolve.
