Sheikh Hasina’s Family Assets and Bank Accounts Frozen in Bangladesh

Dhaka: A court in Dhaka has ordered the seizure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s residence in Dhanmondi, ‘Sudhasadan,’ along with several other properties owned by her family members, who are currently in exile in India. Additionally, the court has directed the seizure of 124 bank accounts belonging to her family, according to an official.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Ghalib issued the order on Tuesday in response to an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The residence, ‘Sudhasadan,’ was named after Sheikh Hasina’s late husband, nuclear scientist MA Wazed Miah, who was affectionately known as Sudha Miah. Apart from Sheikh Hasina, properties owned by her son Sajib Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, and her daughters, Tulip Siddique and Radwan Mujib Siddique, have also been seized.

On February 6, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a strong protest with the Indian Government over what it described as "false and fabricated" comments and statements made by Sheikh Hasina on various platforms, including social media. The ministry accused her of attempting to instigate instability in Bangladesh.

In a protest note handed to the Acting High Commissioner of India in Dhaka, the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry expressed the government’s deep concern, disappointment, and serious reservations over such statements, which it said were hurting the sentiments of the Bangladeshi people.

Bangladesh has urged the Indian Government to take immediate and appropriate measures, in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding, to prevent Sheikh Hasina from making such "false, fabricated, and incendiary statements" while she is in India.

On August 5, a student-led movement led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after weeks of protests and clashes that resulted in over 600 deaths. The 77-year-old leader fled to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus was subsequently formed.
