The court ordered Imamoglu, a prominent rival to President Erdogan, to be jailed pending the outcome of a trial on corruption charges.

A Turkish court on Sunday formally placed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu under arrest pending trial on corruption charges, just days after his detention sparked mass protests across the country.

The mayor is one of 100 individuals under investigation for corruption and is also being investigated in a separate case involving “terror-related” allegations.

Imamoglu, a key opposition figure and potential challenger to long-time President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was detained on Wednesday by the government on charges of corruption and “terrorism.”
